Canggu has definitely exploded in popularity in the past few years. I’ve previously surfed Canggu a few years ago when it was much less popular. And I’ve just recently returned from surfing Canggu and I had a great time. Even with its increased popularity, Canggu is still a great surf destination for all surfers.

Whether you have been surfing for years or just wanting to have fun learning to surf, Canggu offers a selection of surf breaks that lets all levels enjoy the waves here.  And for the best Canggu beginner surf spots, I recommend going to Batu Bolong and for the more intermediate  and advanced surfers head to Echo Beach.

I found myself surfing Echo Beach the most while staying in Canggu recently but unfortunately I was without a surfboard. Which is common for me unless I’m on a designated surf trip.

So, I had to rent some boards while surfing Canggu. This can be annoying if there isn’t many surfboards available or the quality of surfboards available are limited. Luckily, with Canggu being so popular these days all the surf breaks in Canggu have surfboards available in a variety of interesting and good conditions.

Canggu Surf Breaks

Echo Beach: intermediate and advanced

  • Swell Direction: North or Northeast
  • Swell Size: 3-8ft
  • Wind Direction: South or Southwest
  • Tide: Mid

Echo Beach main surfbreak is a super fun wave offering a fun left to play on which barrels best at mid tide. The waves usually offer a steep drop into a barrel, before turning into a nice wall to play on.

There are a few different peaks but the best waves are at the reef which is generally the first break as you walk onto the beach from the south side.

The waves do break in both directions, offing some really good right handers as well. Though it’s predominantly a left hander wave.

Surfboard Hire:

Surfboards are available along Echo Beach next to the beach restaurants and bars. There are a few old short boards, longboards and soft board for beginners. Most boards are in poor to average condition with a lot being waterlogged, though there are a few gems in the mix.

Cost: 60,000 Rupiah per 2 hours

Surfboard condition: poor/average condition.

If you want to hire a better surfboard, then head to Boardriders, they have a decent selection of surfboard you can hire. The shop is located near the main entrance to Echo Beach on Kabupaten Badung.

Cost: $30 USD per day

Surfboard condition: very good

Berewa: beginners

  • Swell Direction: North or Northeast
  • Swell Size: 3-8ft

  • Tide: Mid

This is a great surf break for the intermediate surfer, with a fun range of waves from short barrels to mellow rollers for longboards.

There are usually three surf breaks at Berawa Beach, on your left is a fun wave which barrels on the right day.

In the middle the wave breaks in both directions with a longer rides. And on the right of those two waves and further out is a great wave with a steep take off, but it only works with a big swell.

Surfboard Hire:

There are plenty of surfboards for hire at Berawa. All along the beach there are surfboard rental shops offering surf lessons and surfboard to hire.

Batu Bolong: beginners

One of the best spots for surfing in Bali for beginners is Batu Bolong, the waves are soft and fluffy. With the wave giving a long rides due to the wave breaking, then reforming. It’s very enjoyable surf break for learning how to surf.

The beach is filled with a mixture of kids and adults just playing and having fun learning how to surf.

 Surfboard Hire:

There are plenty of surfboards for hire at Batu Bolong. All along the beach there are surfboard rental shops offering surf lessons and surfboard to hire.

Most of the board are soft longboards because this is a great place for families and for learning to surf. But there are lots nicer longboards and shortboards available if you’re not chasing a softboard.

Old Man’s: Longboard

  • Type of break: Reef
  • Wave Direction: Lefts and rights
  • Best swell: 3-8ft
  • Swell Direction: Southwest
  • Wind Direction: Northeast
  • Tide: Mid

Old Man’s is a great longboarding wave, especially for the intermediate surfer. If you have been learning how to surf at Batu Bolong and feel like stepping up a level, then head north up the beach and give Old Man’s a go.

The waves are friendly and the left is quite long. Plus the current is helpful when paddling to the break. But this can also make paddling back to the beach an effort so do yourself a favour and catch a wave in.

 Surfboard Rentals:

There is really only one place to hire a surfboard at Old Mans, which is Old Man’s Surf Rental located on the street just off the beach. It’s an old shack with plenty of longboards and some good shortboards plus a couple of fun twin fins to play with. They also offer surf lessons, and have a decent reputation.

Cost: 50,000 per 2 hours (surf lessons: 300,000 Rupiah)
